SJCOE’s First Paraeducator Summit Highlights the People Who Help Students—and Communities—Flourish

The people who help a student succeed are not always the ones standing at the front of the classroom.

On July 27, the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) reported that it held its first Paraeducator Summit during July. According to SJCOE, the event brought paraeducators together for professional learning, networking, and recognition of the work they perform in classrooms throughout the county.

Paraeducators work alongside teachers, supporting students in many different ways. They may provide instructional assistance, behavioral support, mobility assistance, communication support, or personal care for students who need additional help to participate fully in school.

Recognizing the Educators Behind the Scenes

According to SJCOE, the county’s first Paraeducator Summit gave paraeducators an opportunity to learn from one another, build professional relationships, and receive recognition for the important work they perform each day. SJCOE also provides professional learning opportunities that support educators serving school districts throughout San Joaquin County.

Although paraeducators often work outside the public spotlight, they are part of the educational team that helps many classrooms function effectively.
