Could a church gathering mean groceries for a family that needs food, clothing for someone who needs it or simply having someone willing to listen and pray?

That is part of what organizers are promising this weekend at The Encounter: Jesus in the City 2026, a free two-day Christian outreach at Weber Point Event Center in downtown Stockton.

The gathering runs Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 4, from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and organizers say everyone is welcome.

Churches, volunteers and community organizations are coming together around worship and prayer, but also around something people can take home: food, groceries, clothing, community resources and other practical help.

Saturday Is the Main Day for Free Food, Clothing and Resources

Families primarily interested in practical assistance should pay particular attention to Saturday.

Organizers list:

  • Free food and drinks
  • Groceries and community resources
  • Free clothing and giveaways while supplies last
  • Medical and community support
  • Children’s activities
  • Information booths and community programs
  • Prayer and ministry support

The event’s official website does not provide a complete list of organizations or specific services that will be available. Someone needing a particular service, such as housing assistance, medical treatment or employment help, should not assume that a specific provider will be there.

There is also one important thing residents seeking assistance should know.

The Encounter describes the event as free and open to the public, but its published information does not clearly state whether receiving groceries, clothing or other assistance requires participation in worship, prayer or another religious activity. Residents attending primarily for practical assistance may want to ask organizers directly if that distinction matters to them.

Churches Are Taking Their Faith Outside Their Walls

The Encounter is not being held inside a church sanctuary.

It is happening at Weber Point Event Center, 221 N. Center St., where churches, ministries, volunteers, families and organizations can serve together in the center of Stockton.

For one volunteer, serving may mean handing someone groceries. Another may distribute clothing, work with children, greet families, staff an information booth or pray with someone who asks for prayer.

Those individual acts may seem small. Together, they allow faith to become visible through practical service.

A person does not have to wonder what a church believes about loving its neighbors when that belief becomes food in someone’s hands, clothing someone can use or time spent helping a family find a needed resource.

Sunday Has a Different Focus

Sunday continues the gathering, but families should not assume it will simply repeat Saturday.

Organizers describe the second day as a community fellowship and celebration featuring food trucks, local businesses, music, worship, prayer and opportunities to connect. Remaining free items may also be distributed if supplies are still available.

That means someone specifically seeking free groceries, clothing or other resources may want to attend Saturday rather than waiting until Sunday.

People interested in volunteering can also find opportunities involving food and clothing distribution, children’s and youth activities, guest services, information booths, prayer and outreach through the event organizer.

This Is Where Faith Becomes Something People Can Experience

Food cannot solve every financial problem. Clothing cannot repair a household budget. And prayer does not eliminate the need for long-term housing, healthcare, employment or other support.

But meeting one need still matters.

For a family that needs groceries, groceries matter.

For someone who needs clothing, clothing matters.

For a person who feels unseen, having another human being stop, listen and care matters.

This weekend at Weber Point, Stockton churches have an opportunity to demonstrate their faith beyond preaching and worship.

They have an opportunity to put it into people’s hands.
